McKinley Kids LOVE reading!

This past fall, our second graders each chose a series to read. And those second graders read and read and read. After becoming experts in their series, each student then made a “billboard” to advertise their series and encourage other students to try a new series.

Not too late to donate money for our school library!

Grab and Go Paperback Library

Located in the hall at the top of the ramp, the Grab and Go Paperback Library is an honor system lending library that makes paperback books available to students, families and teachers at all times. These books are not cataloged and do not need to be checked out. There is also an adult “grab and go” at the head of the stairs stocked with child-rearing and other informational books and magazines for parents.

New Library Computer Lab!

As of October 2009, the McKinley Library is now the McKinley Library Media Center. Thanks to a generous donation from Sun Microsystems and the tireless work of John Renko (McKinley parent) we now have a brand-new, fully-functioning computer lab in the library!

The new lab is using “thin client technology” : the 20 network computers in the library do not have a hard disk drive – the server provides the operating and software to each computer on the network.

Computers are used by all 2nd-5th grade classrooms during library time for research and learning research skills, accessing the library’s online catalog and informational databases, and learning about cyber-safety. All K-5 grade classrooms will be using the lab weekly to learn keyboarding skills and word processing, to do research for classroom projects, and for teachers to support and enhance their curricula using technology.
Library Materials

The McKinley Elementary School Library seeks to provide students and staff with access to current, appropriate information resources, and to improve reading skills by promoting pleasure reading. The library’s goal is to provide a collection of materials that supports the curriculum and the literacy goals of our school community. Please visit our online catalog to see what we have in our collection. See the Library Materials Selection Policy for more details.
Library Schedule

Ms. Volpe, our Library Media Teacher, is at McKinley every Monday and Tuesday. Students visit the library with their class every week for checking out books and for Library Skills and Information Literacy Skills lessons.
