Garden Coordinator Hired for Science Enrichment Support

Our garden committee has been working diligently since last year to fund and hire a new Garden Coordinator to provide science enrichment support to our teachers. The program for this year has funds to support:

* A garden coordinator about one day a week
* 2-4 weekly classes for 45min-1hr

We have hired Caroline Bird, an experiential educator with 7 years of
experience working with school gardens.
* She’s currently working at the Randall Museum, teaching “Corona Heights
Explorers” where kids learn the ecology of their neighborhood through
exploration and observation (for 8-12 yr olds).
* Taught 5 years at the Community Environmental Education Program, an >alternative high school for at-risk students in Daly City, which included an organic garden market and composting operation.
* Managed the Children’s Day School (elementary in the mission) farm with
chickens, sheep, and goats; as well as taught the 2-9 year olds and worked with the teachers.

Caroline has met with the Principal, teachers, and parents and is starting to
work on supporting and reinforcing our science education through hands-on, fun, garden related activities.

A very big thank you to those parents who have worked hard through the hiring process: Charles Thayer, Wendi Raw, Tim Lanehart, and Nann White; and those who worked on the grant last year: Ariane Reineke, Lisa Zahner, and Gretchen Mokry.
